One Response to “One Thrilling Love

  1. Very thought provoking. I have read articles in UUWorld magazine about the Universalists feeling that their doctrines and approaches to life and love have gotten pushed aside in the merged UU denomination. I understand it intellectually, but I find it nigh impossible to adopt the kind of Universal love espoused. I also was reminded of how Paul’s words about love “enduring all things” and maintaining hope “no matter what” have confused people in abusive relationships into believing that they must stay and keep trying in the face of physical, verbal, emotional abuse. I know the “correct” answer to that conundrum is that you must love yourself first and then you will magically know that the “endures all things” doesn’t REALLY apply in that situation, but realistically far too many women (mostly) will keep trying to reach that loving core of their partner, keep trying to be patient and kind, instead of rescuing themselves. Maybe I am defensive about ideas of love that I cannot find a way to experience myself. When I think of someone, for instance, who is a neo-Nazi, I can understand the THEORY of loving the sinner while hating the sin, but in practice I have nothing but hatred and disdain for them. A lot to think about. Thank you Nancy.
